Counseling and Support Services
Child and Adolescent Counseling
Child and Adolescent Counseling empowers the individual by building on his or her interests and gifts. Through counseling, relationships between child and parent, child and sibling, and child and school are strengthened. Sessions are tailored to the needs of the individual while keeping a therapeutic focus of health as the foundation.
In addition to office based counseling sessions, school-based counseling services are available, the counselor comes to the child by providing services at their school. The child is still taken out of class, but it can be anywhere from 20-50 minutes. The counselor is able to work with the child’s school schedule in order to help intervention take place at more helpful times. Additionally, with school-based services, the counselor is able, with parent and/or child permission, to work closely with school teachers and other staff to help meet the child’s needs. Intervention can still be creative with utilizing the outdoors, quiet spaces, play and typical “therapy toys”.
Common issues addressed in counseling include anxiety/worry, depression, anger management, emotion regulation, frustration tolerance, trauma processing, struggles with transitions, sensory related trouble, and more. When therapy is provided in a setting the child is already familiar with, such as school, it allows for the therapeutic relationship to be built quickly, which is one of the most important indicators as to whether counseling will be effective.
Family Counseling
Family Counseling sessions look to the specific needs of each family member and support the family to establish healthy boundaries both within and outside of the family unit. Goals may include: meeting individual needs; valuing playfulness; coaching communication; healthy relating; focusing on attunement and regulation; and healthy refinement of structure.
